Lyrics

Morning Glory

one wild blue chicory flower
alone and blue by the side of the road
and one bright morning glory
swaying in the breeze at the top of the corn
oh, the sky is full and heavy
my heart’s been heavy, too
but as I step into this field
my thoughts all turn to you
and the closing of the day

when you come home at night
your tired eyes are loving and warm
we’ll sit at the kitchen table
eat dinner and not answer the phone
sometimes I sit and listen
and don’t say much at all
but tonight the flowers of the field
have opened up a song
won’t you sing it with me?

ooh, won’t you sing it with me?
we’ll sing ooh
there’s so much beauty that sometimes I miss the forest for the trees
and when I look too far ahead I can miss what’s right in front of me
it’s a complicated, extraordinary life

the days are getting colder
I can feel a change coming on
the zinnias in the garden
don’t stand up quite as tall and strong
but it’s a little like perfection
these blossoms turned to seed
and my perennial flower
is so beautiful to me
she’s a mystery -

ooh, won’t you sing it with me?
we’ll sing ooh
there’s so much beauty that sometimes I miss the forest for the trees
and when I look too far ahead I can miss what’s right in front of me
it can break your heart that it’s so temporary
it can taste sweet as a summer berry
it’s a complicated, extraordinary life
